Infrared sauna · Ravenshead

The full spectrum sauna.

Deep, gentle heat that reaches muscle and tissue, in a cabin you can comfortably sit in.

Deep, gentle heat, at a temperature you can actually sit in.

A traditional sauna heats the air around you, which is why they are so fierce. A full spectrum infrared sauna works differently: it warms you directly, so the cabin stays far more comfortable while the warmth still reaches deep into muscle and tissue.

The cabin seats several people, is lined in cedar, and has chromotherapy lighting you can set to whatever colour you find calming. Sessions are unhurried. Most people sit somewhere between twenty and forty minutes.

For anyone living with chronic pain or fibromyalgia, the appeal is simple. It is warm, it is quiet, and nothing is being done to you.

What the research says

There is published research into far infrared sauna therapy for fibromyalgia, and it is worth knowing what it does and does not show.

A study published in Internal Medicine in 2008 looked at Waon therapy, a standardised far infrared sauna protocol, in thirteen women with fibromyalgia. Reported pain scores fell by roughly half after the first session, settled after around ten sessions, and were still improved when the group was followed up fourteen months later. A separate study combining infrared sauna with underwater exercise in forty four women reported pain reductions ranging from 31 to 77 percent, holding at six months.

Those are genuinely encouraging results. They are also small studies, and the protocol used was specific: a set temperature, a set duration, and a period of rest wrapped in blankets afterwards. We mention the research because it exists and because people ask, not as a promise about what will happen to you.

The same rule as everything else here. No two bodies respond identically, and anyone who promises otherwise is selling something. Heat helps a lot of people with chronic pain and it does nothing for others. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or are taking medication that affects how you handle heat, speak to your doctor before using any sauna.

Asking about it

The sauna is offered to clients after a first session at the clinic, so we know your situation before suggesting it. There is no online booking and nothing to buy upfront.
